Russia is secretly supplying oil to North Korea to circumvent UN sanctions - Reuters

Russia is secretly supplying North Korea with petroleum products in volumes that appear to violate UN Security Council orders, a US official said on Thursday, adding that the US is planning new sanctions in response.

Source. This was reported by Reuters.

The day before, as a result of Moscow's veto, the UN expert group that monitors compliance with the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programmes was disbanded.

"Moscow vetoes the extension of the UN panel's mandate, but at the same time ships oil products from the port of Vostochny to the DPRK. Russian shipments have already exceeded the annual limit of 500,000 barrels set by the UN Security Council," a US official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

According to him, in March alone, Russia supplied North Korea with more than 165,000 barrels of oil products, and given the close proximity of Russian and North Korean commercial ports, Moscow can continue these supplies indefinitely.

The official added that the United States will impose new sanctions on those who facilitate the supply of weapons and petroleum products between Russia and the DPRK.

"We have already been working to coordinate individual sanctions with our partners, including Australia, the European Union, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom, and we will continue to do so," the source told Reuters.

Background. As reported, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and South Korea issued a joint statement on Russia's veto, which would lead to the dissolution of the UN panel of experts to oversee compliance with sanctions against North Korea.
