Residents of Slovakia who do not agree with the policy of Robert Fico's government towards Ukraine have raised money for almost 2,700 shells for Ukrainian artillery as part of a private initiative.

Source. This was reported by the Ukrinform news agency, citing the Czech news agency ČTK.

The organisers of the fundraiser and their Czech partners are negotiating the purchase of 2,692 shells with the Czech military-industrial company STV Group.

Having announced the fundraiser three weeks ago, the organisers initially hoped to raise one million euros, but this amount was raised in just two days.

As of the night of 9 May, the website of the Ammunition for Ukraine initiative shows the amount of €4.189 million. Almost 66,000 people have donated money, including one who gave 100,000 euros at once.

The fundraiser will allow its participants to help Ukraine bypass the national populist government of Robert Fico, who came to power after last October's elections. Fico promised his voters that Slovakia would not send a single patron to Ukraine under his watch.

Fico refused to participate in the Czech project to purchase shells for Ukraine, which has already been joined by about 20 countries.

The Slovak prime minister says that Western aid to Ukraine only prolongs the war, and that Kyiv should lay down its arms and start negotiations with Moscow.

Background. As we wrote earlier, people in Slovakia have raised €2 million to buy shells for Ukraine, despite the government's policy of not providing military aid to Kyiv. The organiser of the fundraising campaign for Ukraine, 99-year-old Otto Simko, survived World War II and the Holocaust.
