Pentagon announces $400m military aid package for Kyiv

The US Department of Defence has released details of another $400 million military aid package for Kyiv, which was previously approved by President Joe Biden.

"This announcement marks the 57th tranche of equipment provided by the Biden administration from the Department of Defence's stockpile to Ukraine since August 2021. This package [...] includes equipment to support Ukraine's most urgent needs on the battlefield, including air defence systems, artillery shells, armoured vehicles and anti-tank weapons," the ministry said.

In particular, Ukraine will receive:

  • additional ammunition for Patriot systems
  • ammunition for NASAMS systems
  • Stinger anti-aircraft missiles
  • HIMARS MLRS and ammunition for them
  • 155-mm and 105-mm artillery shells
  • Bradley infantry fighting vehicles
  • M113 armoured personnel carriers
  • MRAP armoured vehicles
  • missiles with optical guidance
  • Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems
  • high-precision aerial munitions
  • small arms, ammunition and grenades
  • patrol boats
  • chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence equipment

The United States will continue to work with approximately 50 allies and partners to ensure that Ukraine's brave defenders have the critical equipment they need to fight Russian aggression," the Pentagon added.

Background. As a reminder, the White House believes that US military assistance will help Ukraine organise a counter-offensive in 2025. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he still expects "Russian successes in the near future" on the battlefield.
