Romanian President says Romania will provide Ukraine with Patriot system only if they get something in return

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has said that he does not intend to discuss the issue of the possible transfer of the Patriot air defence system to Ukraine "in the broader public space". He also noted that "there is no time horizon" for making this decision.

Source. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine with reference to Digi24.

"I do not comment on this issue and I do not think it should be discussed in a wide public space. This is an issue that should be discussed with military experts, which should ultimately be resolved by the Supreme National Defence Council and the result communicated," Johannis commented on the possible transfer of Patriot.

He also said that a meeting of the Romanian Supreme National Defence Council dedicated to this issue will take place "as soon as the experts clarify the issue".

"It's very complicated, there are contracts between the supplier and the beneficiary, there are very complicated installations, and all this needs to be well clarified," the Romanian head of state added.

Iohannis noted that under no circumstances would he agree that Romania should be left without missile and air defence.

"Therefore, if we end up conceding something, Romania must get something else. Otherwise, nothing will be done," he said.

Background. Earlier it was reported that the Romanian president, after his visit to Biden, "does not rule out" sending one Patriot system to Ukraine.
