The United States prohibits Ukraine from using ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike targets in Russia.

Source. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, which cited unnamed US officials.

On Friday, it became known that President Biden's administration had lifted the ban on the use of Russian weapons against targets located on Russian territory.

In particular, it was said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could hit Russian military targets located in the Belgorod region, from where the Russian army launched a new invasion in the Kharkiv sector and from where it continuously strikes the Kharkiv region.

Previously, Ukraine's western allies refused to give the green light to strikes with their weapons on Russian territory, fearing that this could draw them into direct conflict with Moscow. Ukraine has long asked for such restrictions to be lifted, arguing that without them, the Ukrainian armed forces could have defeated Russian troops in the Belgorod region and thus prevented another offensive.

According to the WSJ, Ukraine will be able to hit targets in Russia with artillery and multiple launch rocket systems such as the GMLRS, which has a range of about 70 km.

However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will still not be able to use ATACMS ballistic missiles, which are launched from HIMARS and have a range of up to 300 km.

‘President Joe Biden recently ordered his staff to ensure Ukraine's ability to use US-supplied weapons for counter-battery purposes in the Kharkiv region so that the Ukrainian military can respond to Russian forces attacking or preparing to attack them,’ a US administration source said.

‘Our policy on the use of ATACMS or strikes on Russian territory with long-range weapons has not changed,’ he stressed.

Background. Earlier today, it became known that Biden ‘quietly’ gave Kyiv permission to use US weapons to strike Russia. So far, it is about strikes on those military facilities from which Russians are shelling Kharkiv region.
