FT: EU to re-impose tariffs on Ukrainian eggs and sugar to appease farmers
Re-imposition of tariffs underlines how difficult Kyiv's accession negotiations will be, the newspaper writes

The European Union intends to reintroduce tariffs on imports of Ukrainian sugar and eggs from Friday, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter. The measure is intended to appease European farmers who protested earlier this year.
Tariffs of 89 euros per tonne on Ukrainian oats were re-imposed last week and will last until June 2025, with a similar decision on eggs and sugar due on Friday, according to the two sources.
The re-imposition of tariffs underscores how difficult Kyiv's EU accession negotiations will be.
Earlier this year, EU countries extended the free trade regime until 2025, but imposed reservations in response to farmers' protests.
The bloc intends to reintroduce tariffs on Ukrainian poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, corn, honey, and cereals if their quantities exceed the average imported in 2022 and 2023.
Oats have already reached this level, with over 6,440 tonnes imported since 1 January. Eggs and sugar have also reached this level, according to people familiar with the situation. Tariffs will be announced on Friday and will be €419 per tonne of white sugar and €339 per tonne of raw sugar, they said. Eggs will cost an additional 30 cents per kg.
Background. Earlier, the media reported that the European Commission is preparing to reintroduce duties on Ukrainian eggs after Ukraine exhausted its quotas for their supply to the EU, and may later consider the issue of sugar.
