The seventh EU country to start receiving gas from Azerbaijan instead of Russian gas
Since August, Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea has been supplied to Slovenia

The volume of gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Europe is growing, gradually replacing Russia in this market. Since 1 August, Azerbaijani gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea has been flowing to Slovenia.
Source. This was reported by the State Oil and Gas Corporation of Azerbaijan SOCAR, DW reports.
"The supplies are carried out in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed on 17 July this year between SOCAR and Geoplin, the largest company in the Slovenian natural gas market, to expand cooperation in the field of gas supply," DW quoted a statement from the SOCAR press service.
Slovenia, which before the war in Ukraine supplied about 40% of its gas consumption through Gazprom, became the seventh European country to connect to imports from Azerbaijan.
Earlier, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Serbia started buying gas from SOCAR.
In addition, Azerbaijani gas is supplied to Georgia and Turkey.
In 2023, Azerbaijan exported 23.8 bcm of gas, of which about half – 11.8 bcm – went to the European market. And by 2027, the European Union plans to triple these volumes and buy 20 bcm of Azerbaijani gas annually, European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said in March.
Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe fell to 28 bcm last year, the lowest level since the late 1970s. In 2024, only Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria will continue to receive Russian gas through pipelines in Europe.
Background. As reported, Gazprom is losing $30 million a day due to the loss of the European gas market – gas production is now the lowest in the company's history, which may have to be rescued by the state.
