Details. “Today, on November 23, 2022, due to a decrease in frequency in the energy system of Ukraine, emergency protection was activated at the Rivne, South Ukraine and Khmelnytsky NPPs, as a result of which all power units were automatically disconnected. They are currently operating in the design mode, without generation to the power system,” the message says.
It is specified that Zaporizhzhia NPP is powered by diesel generators.
According to Energoatom, the radiation background at NPP sites and adjacent territories has not changed, all indicators are normal. “As soon as the operation of the power system is normalised, electricity supply from the NPP will be resumed,” the company adds.
UPDATED:
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine later reported that most thermal and hydroelectric power plants had been also de-energised after the missile attack, as well as power transmission facilities.
“Consequently, the vast majority of electricity consumers across the country were left without electricity. There are emergency shutdowns. Lack of electricity may affect the availability of heat and water supply,” the ministry said. It was specified that power engineers were doing their best to restore power supply as soon as possible. “But, given the scale of the damage, we will need some time,” the Ministry of Energy explained.
