NBU: Last year, Ukrainians carried out electronic payments worth more than 130 trillion UAH

What happened? In 2022, almost 363 million payments worth over 133 trillion UAH were carried out through the system of electronic payments (SEP). To compare, in 2021, 446 million payments were carried out worth more than 57 trillion UAH, it was an 18.7% decrease in the amount of payments last year due to a sharp decline in economic activity in the first months.

Details. On average, during one banking day, the SEP processed about 1.4 million payments worth about 515 billion UAH last year. Potentially, the system can process almost 10 times more payments per banking day than the current volumes. 96% of payments were made by Ukrainian banks and their branches. 

In 2022, small payments were processed most often: up to 1,000 UAH – 45%; up to 100,000 UAH – 51%; from UAH 100,000 and more – 4%.

In terms of amount, most payments were large: up to 1,000 UAH – less than 1%; from 1,000 UAH to 100,000 UAH – 2%; from 100,000 UAH and more – almost 98%.

"We also care about the development of the system and are preparing for the transition to a new generation of SEP, which will provide banks and businesses with new opportunities, strengthen payment security and competition between market participants," said Volodymyr Nagorniuk, Director of the NBU's Information Technology Department. The transition is to take place on April 1, 2023.

The new system provides for round-the-clock operation (currently, the system operates in 23/7 mode). Together with the introduction of the IBAN, this creates the technological basis for Ukraine's accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and the implementation of instant payments in Ukraine.
