What happened? President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed amendments to the legislation on increasing the responsibility of military personnel approved by the Verkhovna Rada.

Details. It is noted that on January 24, the document was returned to the Verkhovna Rada signed by the President.
The law provides for an increase in the term of imprisonment for relevant violations of the law from 3-7 years to 5-8 years, conducting examinations of servicemen for alcohol or drug intoxication, etc.
The legislative changes are expected to improve military discipline and empower the Military Law Enforcement Service of the Armed Forces to combat drug trafficking and alcoholism in military units.
Background. To recap: the Verkhovna Rada supported draft law No. 8271 on strengthening responsibility for war crimes with 270 votes at its meeting on December 13, as well as its immediate signing and submission to the President of Ukraine.
Earlier, Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi called on Volodymyr Zelensky to sign Law No. 8271 on increasing responsibility for desertion and disobedience of military personnel.
