Details. According to Volodymyr Bondarenko, Deputy Mayor and Secretary of the Kyiv City Council, russian narratives have distorted Ukrainian history for decades and have had a propagandistic cultural influence on Ukrainian consciousness.
"Kyiv is gradually getting rid of russian colonial culture. There is no place on the map of the capital for place names that glorify the aggressor state, its Soviet and imperial past. In the hero city of Kyiv, we perpetuate the memory of Ukrainian outstanding historical events, as well as the figures and heroes who fought for the independence of our country...
We have decided to return the historical names to streets, lanes, squares, descents, and avenues whose names were changed by the Soviet authorities in the last century," said Mr. Bondarenko.
A number of city objects have been renamed in the capital: 5 in Holosiyivskyi district, 12 in Shevchenkivskyi district, 1 in Desnianskyi district, 4 in Solomianskyi district, 1 in Sviatoshynskyi district, 3 in Podilskyi district, 1 in Obolonskyi district, and 4 in Pecherskyi district.
Previously. In December, Kyiv City Council members renamed 32 more streets, alleys, and boulevards with names associated with russia and the Soviet past.
