Energoatom will be able to produce nuclear fuel for NPPs on its own in three years – Kotin
russian reserves will be enough for the next 6 years
In three years, Ukraine plans to produce half of the nuclear fuel needed for domestic nuclear power plants on its own. This was announced by the President of SE NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin in an interview with BBC News Ukrainian.
"Energoatom has signed an agreement with Westinghouse, according to which Ukraine is making its own nuclear fuel production line. We are already producing some of the fuel. We are currently preparing a nuclear fuel assembly line in Ukraine. In three years, we will be able to produce our own fuel," Mr. Kotin said.
According to him, Ukraine currently has enough fuel stocks from russia and Westinghouse to keep the reactors operating for at least two more years. Four years is how long it will work in the reactor. And in six years, the last russian reserves will be used.
"At the beginning of the war, we completely refused to buy russian fuel. And now we will take only Westinghouse fuel. And in three years, our line will be commissioned using Westinghouse technology. We will produce part of the fuel ourselves and buy the rest from Westinghouse. Westinghouse's share will be about 50%," Mr. Kotin stated.
