Spain is expected to send its first batch of modern battle tanks to Ukraine by the end of next week, when the vehicles complete their last test firing in the field, the Spanish Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, CNN reports.
Six Leopard 2A4 tanks have passed their final inspections at an arms factory near Seville in southern Spain, the statement said.
Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles visited the factory on Thursday and said that four more Leopard tanks destined for Ukraine would soon arrive for inspection and testing.
The first group of Ukrainian soldiers to learn how to drive Spanish tanks is completing training at a military base in northern Spain, the Defence Ministry said last week.
Robles first told the Spanish parliament last month that the country would send six Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
The day after, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made a surprise visit to Kyiv on the anniversary of the russian invasion. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced that Spain would increase its commitment of 10 combat vehicles.
Background. The United States reportedly will deliver Abrams tanks to Ukraine much faster than originally promised.
