Portugal will provide 75 thousand euros to collect evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine

The Portuguese authorities have announced that they will financially support the collection of evidence of war crimes in Ukraine and may send experts from the Judicial Police and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

"As for the support of the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations of war crimes committed in Ukraine, in particular the crime of aggression, Portugal has already provided additional support by sending a national expert from the Judicial Police and making an advance payment of the national contribution to the ICC at the request of the prosecutor's office," the Portuguese Ministry of Justice said.
The ministry said that Minister Catarina Sarmiento e Castro announced a voluntary contribution of 75 thousand euros to support the international collection of forensic evidence in Ukraine.
In addition, other forms of cooperation are being considered.
The Portuguese government is considering "sending experts from the Judicial Police and the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science to join the teams of forensic experts in the field on a rotational basis," the statement said.
It is noted that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 72,000 war crimes committed by the Russian military have been recorded, according to a representative of the Department for Supervision of Investigation of Crimes Committed in the Armed Conflict, the Public Opinion Group Mykola Hovorukha.
