As noted, the term of Chief of the General Staff of the russian federation Gerasimov in office (from 11 January 2023) was characterised by an attempt to launch a general winter offensive to extend russia's control over the entire Donbas region. However, eighty days on, it is increasingly apparent that this project has failed.
British intelligence notes that on several frontlines in the east, russian troops have made only minor gains at the cost of tens of thousands of casualties, largely wasting their temporary advantage in personnel gained from the autumn "partial mobilisation".
It is also noted that after ten years of Gerasimov's work in the russian General Staff, there is a realistic possibility that he is pushing the limits of how long the russian political leadership will tolerate failure.
