Energoatom and Canada's CÀÌÅCÎ sign an agreement on the use of Ukrainian uranium

Energoatom has signed an agreement with the Canadian company ÑÀÌÅÑÎ, which is the last necessary step to implement the programme for the use of Ukrainian uranium in the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

This was reported by the press service of Energoatom.

Energoatom President Petro Kotin and CAMECO President and CEO Tim Hitzel signed the Agreement on weighing, sampling, analysis, storage and transportation of uranium concentrate in Canada in the presence of Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

The document regulates the physical supply of uranium oxide concentrate (UOC) from Ukraine to Canada and related conditions. In particular, the agreement provides for the supply of the entire volume of uranium produced at Eastern Mining and Processing Plant to Canada and the further use of uranium concentrate for conversion and supply of natural uranium hexafluoride (UF6) for enrichment.

"This is a landmark event for the Ukrainian nuclear industry, it guarantees its stability and, consequently, stable electricity supply to citizens," Mr. Kotin said.

Background. Earlier, Energoatom and CAMECO signed agreements to ensure a stable supply of nuclear fuel. Under the first agreement, CAMECO is to meet Energoatom's needs for natural uranium hexafluoride by 100% in 2024-2035. It will be supplied to the reactors of Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine NPPs.

In addition, the energy ministries of Ukraine and the United States, together with the Net Zero World initiative, are preparing a programme of cooperation to develop the Ukrainian energy sector. It will include cooperation in the development of electricity transmission systems and the construction of small modular reactors in Ukraine.
