Haydu: Harvest in three regions is under threat due to the explosion of Kakhovka hydroelectric power station

The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and the shallowing of the Kakhovka reservoir endanger agricultural land in three regions of Ukraine, which used to be irrigated with water from the reservoir, said the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy.

Source. This was stated by the chairman of the parliamentary committee, Oleksandr Haidu, the press service of the Verkhovna Rada reports.

According to him, agricultural enterprises in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro regions, located around the reservoir, often suffer from drought, and the shallowing of the reservoir threatens to kill crops.

"The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant is a terrorist act that threatens global food security. The consequences are already very significant for our farmers, as it is now impossible to irrigate land in the three regions that depend on the Kakhovka HPP. These regions supply our food to the whole world," Gaidu said.

Background. Meanwhile, it became known that the disaster at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant caused a rise in wheat prices – wheat futures in the United States rose to $6.4 per bushel, rising from a more than two-year low of $5.9.
