The Verkhovna Rada has passed a law to tackle tuberculosis in Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada supported in general the law on combating tuberculosis in Ukraine. 241 MPs voted in favour.

This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak.

The law is aimed at updating and improving rules in the fight against tuberculosis, ensuring compliance with its requirements to legislation in the field of health care, and regulating the use of modern medical achievements and practices in accordance with WHO guidelines.

In particular, it defines a mechanism for ensuring preventive treatment of tuberculosis through centralised procurement of medicines, which will then be distributed among medical service providers in the regions through the National Health Service.

According to the document, the law also establishes a three-tier system of microbiological laboratories for diagnosing tuberculosis, headed by the Central Reference Laboratory, which should provide external quality control of lower-level laboratories.

In addition, conditions are created for educating learners, including children, suffering from tuberculosis.

Additionaly, the law strengthens the social protection of workers of regional phthisiopulmonology centres, giving them the right to an annual additional paid vacation.

Moreover, according to the document, it is prohibited for pharmacy establishments to sell to individuals medical products belonging to the antituberculous pharmacotherapeutic group of medical products without a doctor's prescription.
