China imposes export controls on drones to stop their use for military purposes

China will introduce export controls on drones and their components on September 1.

Source. Reuters writes about this with reference to a statement by a representative of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China.

The restrictions will apply to some engines, lasers, communications equipment, and drone defense systems. The export of civilian drones for military use is also prohibited.

A ministry spokesperson emphasized that this step demonstrates China's commitment to "global security and maintaining peace around the world." The PRC authorities have already notified interested countries and regions of the upcoming restrictions.

The official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, the "Zhenmin Zhibao", specifies that under the new rules, it is necessary to obtain permission to export drones that have the following characteristics

  • maximum battery life of more than 30 minutes, maximum takeoff weight of more than 7 kg;
  • equipped with a throwing device;
  • can fly beyond the natural visibility of operators.

In April, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce denied reports in the Western media that Chinese UAVs were being used in combat in Ukraine.

In the spring of 2022, the Chinese corporation DJI (the world's largest manufacturer of commercial UAVs) announced that it was leaving both the Russian and Ukrainian markets to prevent its products from being used for military purposes.

Background. Earlier, Politico published an article about China secretly sending equipment for the war against Ukraine, including drones, to Russia, bypassing sanctions.
