Hungary and Russia sign plan for joint construction of Paks 2 NPP
Two new power units at Paks NPP will be connected to the grid in the early 2030s
The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian state corporation Rosatom have signed a schedule for the construction of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant.
Source. This was reported to journalists on Tuesday, November 14, by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, who visited the construction site in Paks together.
According to Szijjarto, the connection of the two new nuclear power units to the grid is scheduled for the early 2030s. "It's been a long way, but finally the work will be related to real construction, not paperwork," the Foreign Minister said.
Likhachev, in turn, assured that the state corporation will pay "special attention" to the project and will send "the best forces" to it.
"Attention to this project will be increased," he said.
Russia and Hungary signed documents on the construction of two new power units No. 5 and 6 (Paks-2) at the Paks NPP in 2014. The total cost of the project was estimated at 12.5 billion euros. In August 2022, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued a license to Rosatom for the construction of the power units.
In May of this year, the European Commission approved amendments to the agreements on the construction of the plant and project financing. The construction of Paks-2 is expected to begin in late 2024 or early 2025, the head of Rosatom said earlier.
