Zelenskyy and von der Leyen agree to start screening Ukrainian legislation for EU accession

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the press service of the head of state reports.
The interlocutors discussed the key priorities on the agenda of relations between Ukraine and the EU in the near future, primarily in the context of our country's approach to the actual start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
As stated in the message, the Ukrainian President and the Head of the European Commission agreed to start screening Ukrainian legislation, which is another step towards the opening of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
The parties paid special attention to the importance of unblocking the decision to provide our country with EUR 50 billion of EU assistance at an extraordinary meeting of the European Council to be held on February 1, 2024. Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for a consensus on this issue.
Background. As a reminder, Ursula von der Leyen said that Russia is failing to achieve its strategic goals in Ukraine. She emphasized that Ukraine can win this war, but the EU must continue to support it.
