US court orders Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer Jean Carroll for defamation

A jury in a federal court in New York has ruled that former US President Donald Trump must pay writer and journalist Elizabeth Jean Carroll more than $83 million in compensation for defamation.

Source. This is reported by The Insider.

The amount of compensation includes $11 million for damage to the writer's reputation, $7.3 million for emotional distress, and $65 million in penalties.

Trump himself left the courtroom without waiting for the verdict. On the Truth Social website, he called the verdict "absolutely ridiculous."

Trump said he plans to appeal, and again called Carroll's lawsuit a witch hunt "led by Biden that targets me and the Republican Party."

He added: "They have taken away all my First Amendment rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!"

This is compensation for defamation on social media, at press conferences, and during the campaign by Trump, who insulted Carroll and accused her of lying after she accused him of gang rape in a store in the mid-nineties in 2019.

As the journalist wrote in her column, the billionaire kissed her forcefully, pulled down her underwear, and raped her.

In May 2023, a jury found Trump guilty of sexualized violence and defamation, awarding Carroll $5 million, but he continued to accuse Carroll of deception and insult.

The journalist herself also said that she received constant threats from Trump supporters.

After the column was published, Trump claimed that Carroll was not to his taste. He was shown a photo of Carroll talking to Trump and his wife Ivanka. Looking at the photo, Trump confused his wife with a journalist.

Background. As a reminder, Zelenskyy called Trump's statements about ending the war "overnight" "frightening" and invited him to Ukraine.
