Slovak PM Fico says he supports Ukraine's accession to the EU
Kyiv can count on Slovakia's "absolute and full" support, he assured
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that he supports Ukraine's accession to the European Union. He made the statement at a joint press conference with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
Fico, who is often called a pro-Russian politician, said that Kyiv can count on Slovakia's "absolute and complete" support for European integration.
"We are not a country that will create obstacles on your way to the EU. On the contrary, we want to help you, to share our experience with you in the accession negotiations," Fico was quoted as saying by Ukrainska Pravda.
According to Fico, Ukraine's accession to the EU is "a guarantee for the country's prospects, for the country's development and for peaceful development".
"We are keeping our fingers crossed for you," Fico also said.
Fico also said that Slovakia will take part in the Peace Summit in Switzerland in the summer, where the "Formula for Peace" of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be discussed.
On Thursday, members of the governments of Slovakia and Ukraine are holding consultations in the Slovak city of Michalovce, located near the Ukrainian border.
Fico's government has stopped providing military assistance to Ukraine. Fico also criticised the West's position on the war waged by Russia. He called on Western countries to stop military aid to Kyiv, immediately cease fire and start peace talks with Moscow.
Among other things, he said that Vladimir Putin has been "unfairly demonised" and that Ukraine's admission to NATO would mean the beginning of World War III.
