An operation of rescuing the defenders of Mariupol starts – Hanna Malyar
53 seriously injured soldiers were evacuated to a medical facility in occupied Novoazovsk, another 211 people were evacuated to Olenivka

It was informed that the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine together with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard and the Border Guard Service has launched an operation to rescue the defenders of Mariupol besieged at the Azovstal plant.
Source. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Malyar.
Details. On 16 May, 53 seriously injured soldiers were evacuated from Azovstal to a medical facility in occupied Novoazovsk. Another 211 people were taken to Olenivka through the humanitarian corridor. An exchange procedure will be carried out for their returning home.
Measures necessary for rescuing defenders who remain on the territory of Azovstal continue to be taken.
“Thanks to the defenders of Mariupol, we have gained critical time to build reserves, regroup forces and receive assistance from partners. All defenders of Mariupol have completed the tasks given by the command in full. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to relieve the siege of Azovstal by military means,” Hanna Malyar stressed.
In the evening of May 16, Azov Regiment Commander Denys Prokopenko stated: “The defenders of Mariupol obeyed the order, despite all the difficulties, and were delaying the overwhelming forces of the enemy for 82 days. We allowed the Ukrainian army to regroup, train more personnel and receive a large number of weapons from international partners. No weapon will work without professionally trained servicemen, making them the most valuable element of the army. In order to save lives, the entire Mariupol garrison is implementing the approved decision of the Supreme Military Command and hopes for the support of the Ukrainian people.”
In his evening address, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine needs the Ukrainian heroes of Mariupol alive.
