EU leaders will approve granting Ukraine EU candidate status – draft decision

What happened? The leaders of the European Union intend to approve the recommendation of the European Commission to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of a candidate for EU membership.
Source. This is stated in the latest draft conclusions of the EU summit, which was made available to Euractiv.
Details. “The European Council has decided to grant the status of candidate country to Ukraine and to the Republic of Moldova,” the document states.
Decisions on the further steps regarding the country's accession to the EU will be taken after the fulfilment of all conditions set out by the European Commission.
The first report on the assessment of Ukraine's meeting of the conditions is expected in the framework of the European Commission's regular analysis of enlargement by the end of this year.
Background. On June 17, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status as a symbolic step on the long road to membership in the European Union.
