UNESCO includes Ukrainian borscht in the list of intangible cultural heritage

What happened? Today, at the 5th extraordinary meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, the element “Culture of making Ukrainian borscht” was added to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Details. In view of the danger, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy appealed to the UNESCO Secretariat with a request to transfer the submitted nomination to the UNESCO List of Urgent Safeguarding.
“Borsch is an element of social integration and cohesion, which serves to unite the people of Ukraine, regardless of age, gender or origin.
In this sense, the element demonstrates the important role of intangible cultural heritage during armed conflicts and emergency situations,” the Ministry reports.
Background. More than 150 cultural objects were damaged or destroyed in Ukraine as a result of russian invasion of Ukraine. UNESCO will soon send a cultural heritage mission to Ukraine.
