The Council of the European Union supported Ukrainian eurointegration intention

“Heroic Ukrainian nation deserves to know that it is welcome in the European Union” - Gitanas Nauseda, the President of Lithuania, said.

The Council of the European Union recognized European aspirations and the choice of Ukraine. The European Commission was proposed to prepare its conclusions regarding the Ukrainian application for membership in the EU.

It was reported by the EU Concil’s statement, which summarized the results of EU leaders’ meeting in Versailles.

“The EU council recognized European aspirations and the European choice of Ukrane, as it was mentioned in the Association Agreement”, – the statement says.

According to this document, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy realised his state’s right  to make an application to join the European Union. The EU Conuncil urged the European Commission to share its opinion regarding this question.

“While waiting for this answer, we will strenghten our liasons and make our partnership deeper to support Ukraine in its following the European way. Ukraine belongs to our European family”, – the statement says.

Also, the EU Council proposed to make similar conclusions concerning Moldova’s and Georgia’s applications.

European leaders emphasized their readiness to provide Ukraine with political, financial, material, and humanitarian support. Additionally, they expressed the intention t help with the restoration of democratic Ukraine after stopping the Russian invasion.

However, this statement does not mention tje procedure of accelerated entry for Ukraine, as Volodymyr Zelensky outlined.

“Uncaused and unbased russian military aggression against Ukraine harshly violates the international law, the UN Charter principles, and breaks European and global security and stability. This war brings sufferings to Ukrainian people. Russia alongside with its ally Belarus are totally responsible for this aggressive war and will be punished for their actions, especially for civil objects and civil citizens shellings”, – the resolution says.

The President of Lithuanian is optimistic about the EU Council’s decision about european perspectives of Ukraine.

“A historic night at Versailles. After five hours of heated discussions EU leaders said yes to Ukrainian eurointegration. The process started. Now it is up to us and Ukrainians to accomplish it fast. Heroic Ukrainian nation deserves to know that they are welcome in EU” – Nauseda urged.
