The NERC proposes allowing biogas producers to transfer their surplus to the GTS

The National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities (NERC) proposes to allow biogas producers, in the presence of a reverse compressor station which is part of the gas transport system (GTS), to transfer excess gas to the networks of the respective Gas Distribution System Operator, in the GTS Operator's network.

This is stated on the regulator's website.

Additionally, the draft resolution envisages the exclusion of requirements for the installation of flow chromatographs for gas transfer points with a capacity of less than 3000 cubic m/hour.

It is noted that this will allow biogas producers to reduce the cost of installing expensive devices for facilities with small production volumes.

The commission plans to consider the resolution at a meeting on June 8.

Recall that in February 2023, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, signed a memorandum on strategic partnership in the field of biomethane, hydrogen and synthetic gases. The agreement is aimed at joint work on resolving technical and regulatory issues in the production, transportation, and storage of biomethane.

Background. Earlier, the Head of the board of the public union Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Heorhiy Heletukha, told Mind that Ukraine had a chance to become a European leader in biomethane production.
